If you are looking for a NotebookLM alternative because you need to change your documents, not just ask about them, Fable is built for that: its assistant answers questions across every document in a project and proposes edits you approve in one click and can undo later. NotebookLM is designed to help you understand sources. Fable is designed to help you write and maintain the documents themselves.
A quick note on names: in July 2026 Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. It is the same standalone product, and your notebooks carried over. We use both names here because most people still search for NotebookLM.
Last updated: October 18, 2026. Details about NotebookLM come from Google's public help pages and announcements on that date.
What NotebookLM Does Well
NotebookLM is one of the best tools available for making sense of a pile of material. You add sources (PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs and Slides) and ask questions, and its answers are grounded in those sources with inline citations you can click to check. It can turn the same material into study guides, briefings, mind maps, flashcards and quizzes, and its Audio Overviews and Video Overviews, which turn your sources into a spoken or visual summary, are genuinely useful for absorbing a topic on the go. Google has also been adding data analysis inside notebooks on its higher plans.
For students, researchers and anyone onboarding into an unfamiliar subject, it is an excellent place to start, and you can begin for free.
Where a Different Tool Fits
NotebookLM works from your sources. It creates new outputs about them, such as notes, guides and summaries, rather than editing the documents you added. That is the right design for research. It is a gap if your real job is keeping a set of documents correct: a policy handbook, a proposal and its appendices, product documentation, a contract set, a manuscript.
In that work, the question is rarely just "what does this say?" It is "what does this say, and please fix it everywhere it is wrong." That is the job Fable (fable.la) is built for.
How Fable's Assistant Works
- Bring your documents into a project. Import Word, PDF, Markdown or text files (each file becomes an editable document with its headings and tables), or write new ones in Fable. See import and export.
- Ask a question. Type or speak it: "Which of our onboarding docs still mention the old VPN setup?" The assistant searches and reads across the project and answers, naming the documents involved.
- Ask for the change. "Update all of them to the new setup steps." The assistant proposes the edits as diffs, one per document, and can also propose brand-new documents or new titles.
- Approve or dismiss. Nothing changes until you approve. Approved changes go through the normal edit history, with the author and a diff, so any document can be restored to an earlier version. See version history.
You can also edit a single document directly by typing or speaking an instruction; see editing with AI. Collaborators join projects as Editors or Viewers, and Viewers can leave typed or spoken suggestions that owners accept or reject.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is NotebookLM still called NotebookLM?
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026. It remains a standalone product, existing notebooks carried over, and many people still search for it by its original name.
What is a good NotebookLM alternative for editing documents?
If you want to ask questions about your documents and also change them, Fable is built for that. Its project assistant answers questions across every document in a project and proposes edits as diffs you approve in one click, and every approved change is saved to a version history you can restore from.
Can Fable read PDFs like NotebookLM?
Yes, in a different way. Fable imports PDFs, Word files, Markdown and text files and turns each one into an editable document in your project, keeping headings and tables. The assistant then answers questions across those documents. Fable does not take websites, videos or audio files as sources.
Does Fable make audio overviews or study guides?
No. Fable does not generate audio or video overviews, mind maps or flashcards. You can ask the assistant to draft a summary or briefing as a new document, which you can then edit like any other.
Should I use NotebookLM and Fable together?
They fit together well. NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) is excellent for reading and understanding a pile of sources. Fable is for writing and maintaining the documents that come out of that understanding, with collaborators, suggestions and version history.
